Imja Tse was first summated in 1956 by a Swiss team as a training exercise for climbing the Mount Everest and Lhotse. It is one of the most popular peaks for its accessibility and its unique beauty.  Tenzing Norgay, the firest person to climb mount Everest was also among one of the successful summiteers of the peak. The Island peak forms a part of the southern ride of the Lhotse Shar. A semicircle of cliffs at the peak extends to the north of mountains like Nuptse, Lhotse and Lhotse Shar. Mount Makalu and Cho Polu lie towards the East of Island peak while Amphu and Mount Ama Dablam lie to its west.

The climb to Island peak starts from the base camp that is at a height of 5087 meters. The base camp is also popularly known as Pareshaya Gyab. Some climbers also ascend to the high camp that lies at 5600 meters from the sea level. The second option is meant for lessening the effort required for the climb. Island Peak although being strenuous and difficult due to steep paths gives an unforgettable experience. Mount Everest and Lhotse are within the 10 kilometer range from the peak.
